Muscle tissue is metabolically active and does burn meaningfully more per kilogram than fat tissue at rest. But the popular claim that "1 kg of muscle burns 50–100 extra calories a day" is a significant exaggeration of the research — the real figure is closer to a 3x per-kg advantage, not a 10x one.

Doing the math: gaining 5 kg of muscle (a substantial, months-long achievement for most people) would raise BMR by roughly 40–65 calories/day — genuinely useful, especially since it's permanent as long as the muscle is maintained, but a modest number compared to the effect of your total activity level.

The "Afterburn" Effect (EPOC)

Resistance training also creates a temporary post-exercise calorie burn called EPOC (Excess Post-exercise Oxygen Consumption), sometimes called "afterburn." This is real but time-limited — typically adding a modest number of extra calories over the hours following an intense session, not a lasting change to your resting rate on its own. It’s a nice bonus on top of the long-term muscle-building effect, not a separate major lever.
