BMR vs TDEE: What’s the Difference?

These two numbers get mixed up constantly, and mixing them up is the single most common reason people’s calorie targets are wrong. Here’s exactly what separates them — and which one you should actually be eating around.

The Short Answer

BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) is the energy your body burns just to stay alive — breathing, circulating blood, keeping organs running — measured under complete rest with zero movement or digestion. TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure) is your BMR plus everything else you burn in a real day: walking, working, exercising, fidgeting, and digesting food. TDEE is always the larger number, usually by 20–90% depending on how active you are.

How TDEE Is Actually Calculated

TDEE is built directly on top of your BMR using an activity multiplier. That’s why getting your BMR right matters — every downstream number, including your calorie target, inherits any error in it.

Worked example: a 30-year-old, 70 kg, 175 cm male has a BMR of roughly 1,649 cal/day. At moderate activity (×1.55), his TDEE is about 2,556 cal/day — more than 900 calories higher than his BMR. That gap is entirely made up of movement, exercise and digestion.

Which One Should You Actually Use?

Use BMR as a floor, not a target — it tells you the minimum your body needs to function, so you know never to eat consistently below it.

Use TDEE to set your actual calorie intake — whether you’re maintaining, cutting, or bulking, your target is a percentage adjustment of TDEE, not BMR.

A Common Mistake

A lot of people accidentally eat close to their BMR when trying to lose weight quickly, assuming smaller numbers are "safer." In reality, eating at or near BMR for an extended period isn’t a more aggressive diet — it’s a signal to your body that food is scarce, and it tends to backfire through fatigue, muscle loss and rebound eating. Your calorie target should be built from TDEE minus a moderate deficit, never from BMR directly.
