"My metabolism slowed down after 40" is one of the most common complaints in health and fitness — and it’s usually at least partly true. Here’s what’s actually behind it, and what genuinely helps versus what doesn’t.

Sarcopenia — age-related muscle loss — picks up pace from around this decade onward if not actively countered, especially in people who become progressively less active. Since muscle drives a meaningful share of BMR, this is the single biggest contributor to the "slowdown."

Both men and women experience gradual hormonal changes in this decade — declining testosterone in men, and perimenopause beginning for many women — both of which are associated with shifts toward increased fat storage and reduced muscle mass.

3 Activity level quietly drops

Career and family demands often mean less incidental movement (NEAT) and less time for structured exercise than in earlier decades — a lifestyle shift that compounds with the biological changes above.

4 Sleep quality often declines

Sleep disruption becomes more common in this age range for various reasons, and poor sleep is linked to metabolic hormone disruption that can modestly affect appetite and energy expenditure.

The honest reframe: your metabolism after 40 isn’t betraying you out of nowhere — it’s responding to real, identifiable changes, most of which (muscle mass and activity level) are things you can meaningfully influence, even if you can’t fully reverse them.

What Genuinely Helps

Prioritise resistance training, at least 2–3 sessions weekly — this is the single most effective countermeasure to sarcopenia at any age.

Increase protein intake slightly, since research suggests older adults may need somewhat more protein than younger adults to maintain the same muscle-building response.

What Doesn’t Help

Crash diets, metabolism-boosting supplements, and detox regimens don’t address the actual drivers of midlife metabolic change — muscle mass and activity level. If anything, aggressive restriction without adequate protein and resistance training accelerates the very muscle loss that’s the root of the problem.
