Our Mission
Most people trying to lose weight, gain muscle, or just eat better start with the same question: "How many calories do I actually need?" The honest answer requires knowing your Basal Metabolic Rate first — and most tools online either bury this behind ads, oversimplify it into a single vague number, or skip the "why" entirely.
BMRCalculator.in exists to fix that. We built a calculator that shows its work — the exact formula used, a step-by-step worked example, and the reasoning behind every number it gives you — plus in-depth, plain-language guides so you understand not just your result, but what to do with it.
Our Methodology
Every number our calculator produces is based on published, peer-reviewed formulas — not proprietary guesswork:
- Mifflin-St Jeor (1990) — our default formula, widely regarded as the most accurate for the general population and recommended by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
- Harris-Benedict (1919, revised 1984) — included for historical comparison and cross-referencing against older figures.
- Katch-McArdle (1996) — automatically used when you provide a body fat percentage, since it's more accurate for lean and athletic individuals.
You can read the full breakdown, including the exact equations and a worked example, on our BMR Formulas Explained page.
Editorial Standards
Every guide on this site is written to be genuinely useful, not padded for search engines. We:
- Base claims on established nutrition science and widely accepted clinical formulas
- Update pages when formulas, research, or our own calculator logic changes
- Clearly separate estimates from measured facts, and general guidance from medical advice
- Never recommend extreme diets, supplements, or unsustainable calorie targets
Important: we are an informational resource, not a medical provider. Read our full Disclaimer before making health decisions based on any calculator result.
