The Core Difference Is the Test Conditions
BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) is measured under the strictest possible conditions: after 8 hours of sleep, 12 hours of fasting, lying completely still in a temperature-controlled room, with no prior exercise. RMR (Resting Metabolic Rate) is measured under looser, more realistic conditions — you don’t need to have just woken up or fasted overnight, and slight movement beforehand is tolerated.

Why This Happens
The extra 5–10% in RMR comes mostly from the thermic effect of any recent food (digestion burns calories) and residual energy expenditure from movement earlier in the day that hasn’t fully settled. True BMR eliminates both of these by strictly controlling fasting time and requiring total stillness beforehand — conditions that are genuinely difficult to reproduce outside of a sleep lab.
In practice: almost no consumer scale, calculator, or even clinical dietitian's office measures true BMR. What gets called "BMR" online — including on this site — is a formula-based estimate that functions the same way RMR does. The terms are used interchangeably because the practical difference rarely changes what you'd do with the number.
