2 Hormones and thyroid function
Thyroid hormones directly regulate metabolic rate. Hypothyroidism tends to lower BMR, while hyperthyroidism raises it. If your BMR feels unusually off from formula estimates, thyroid function is worth discussing with a doctor.
3 Dieting history
Repeated cycles of severe calorie restriction ("yo-yo dieting") are associated with greater muscle loss per diet cycle, which can compound into a lower BMR than someone with the same stats but no restrictive dieting history.
4 Pregnancy
BMR rises during pregnancy to support fetal growth and increased maternal tissue — standard formulas don’t account for this, so pregnant individuals should rely on medical guidance rather than a general calculator.
5 Illness, fever and stress
Fever and acute illness temporarily raise BMR as the body fights infection or repairs tissue. Chronic psychological stress can also shift metabolic hormones, though effects here are smaller and more individual.
6 Environmental temperature
Extended exposure to cold can modestly raise energy expenditure through processes like shivering and, in some, brown fat activation. Effects are generally small for people living in typical climate-controlled environments.
